Gave in and bought a $300 solar generator back in 2019, and it paid for itself during the 3 day blackout last August
I live in central Florida where the power grid is shaky during hurricane season, so I figured it was worth the gamble on a Jackery 240. It kept my fridge running and my phone charged while the whole neighborhood was sitting in the dark. Has anyone else had those mid-tier backup units hold up better than expected or did I just get lucky?

Honestly, you might have just gotten lucky. Mid-tier power stations like the Jackery are fine for a short flicker but a 3 day blackout pushing a fridge is pushing it for most people.

Funny you mention that, my neighbor tried running his fridge off a tiny unit during that big storm last year. Didn't end well.

Question how bad do things have to get before people start thinking ahead? A fridge doesn't pull that much power if you're smart about it, keep the door shut and run it in cycles. @davidkim's neighbor probably tried running the whole thing nonstop like it was plugged into the wall. Three days off a Jackery 240 sounds totally doable for a small fridge and some phone charging in my book. People act like you need a whole gas generator setup just to survive a Tuesday afternoon flicker. It's not that serious.
