My neighbor's 3 minute rant about smart plugs changed how I set my whole home lighting

He told me the cheap wifi plugs on Amazon all share the same server in China and now I only buy Z-Wave stuff that works locally without the internet, has anyone else had a smart home gadget stop working because the company went under?

Had a camera brand go under and the app just stopped working overnight. Total brick.

Ha, @nguyen.angela that's basically what I'm expecting from my cheap drone that relies on an app. I can barely keep my phone alive until noon, let alone trust a company to keep servers running! Just hoping mine dies in a spectacular crash instead of a boring app shutdown.

Can't believe they just shut it off like that with zero warning. That's so messed up companies can just kill your hardware with a server shutdown. Did you at least try to see if there was a way to hack it or sideload something to keep it working? People usually figure out workarounds after stuff like this happens. Still though what a waste of money.
