Hot take: community gardens beat farmer's markets cold for real connection

I spent 5 summers going to the farmer's market every Saturday in Austin and barely knew anyone's name past the vendor I bought eggs from. Then my block started a tiny garden in an empty lot last spring, and within 2 months I knew 8 neighbors by first name and we were trading tips on keeping squash bugs off. Has anyone else found that working side by side on a shared project builds way more trust than just buying stuff from someone?

Oh man, this is so true. My friend Kelly joined a community garden plot in her alley and now she swaps zucchini for her neighbor's homemade salsa every week. She barely even knew that neighbor's name before, and now they're planning a block party together.

Has a little salsa ever solved more neighborhood problems than a homeowners association meeting? @moore.beth, your friend Kelly is living proof that the way to a community's heart is through their vegetable gardens. Pretty soon they'll be arguing over who makes the best compost instead of whose dog barked too loud.

Hold up, I gotta push back a little here. Is it REALLY that deep, y'all? I've been to plenty of community gardens where people still just keep to themselves and mostly complain about the heat or who forgot to water. Getting to know neighbors over zucchini swaps sounds nice, but I've also seen gardens turn into drama pits over who gets the best sunny spot or whose tomatoes are taking over the path. Don't get me wrong, it's cool if it works for some people, but let's not act like every garden makes you instant best friends. Farmers markets at least let you choose your level of chat, no pressure to be BFFs with the compost king.
