Got dumped after I said her homemade sourdough starter reminded me of my ex's cat

I was at a friend's dinner party last Saturday and made a joke comparing her 6 month old starter to my ex's moody cat that would hiss at everyone, and she packed up the bread and told me to leave, so has anyone else ever torpedoed a relationship with a random comment that wasn't even meant to be mean?

Wait, did she REALLY kick you out over that? That seems like a lot for a comment that was basically just a joke. I once told my friend her new boyfriend's laugh reminded me of a seagull we saw fighting over a french fry, and she didn't talk to me for two months. People get SO weirdly attached to specific things, like bread or cats or whatever. It's like they forget you're just making an observation, not attacking their whole life. You're definitely not alone in accidentally setting off a bomb with a totally random comment.

Ngl that seems like a massive overreaction over bread.

and like i get that people have different food things but @beth276 i had a buddy who literally had a panic attack in a grocery store once because someone grabbed the last loaf of sourdough and he'd been planning on making a specific sandwich all week. he still brings it up sometimes. not saying it's normal but everyone's got their weird breaking point i guess. maybe it's just me but i can see how something small like bread could be the thing that tips someone over.
