inI stopped rushing my pork shoulder and it made all the difference.
Stop rushing the cook. I used to crank my smoker to 275 trying to save a couple hours, and the pork shoulder always fought me. Now I set it at 225, wrap it in butcher paper once the bark is set, and just let it ride until it probes like butter. That bone pull is the only test that matters.

inA creek find shook my trust in simple scratch tests
Scratch tests can totally fool you sometimes. Your feldspar story shows they're not perfect on their own. Gotta use a couple different checks to be sure.

inSerious question, my weekend rust repair project turned into a full color change idea.
Know exactly how that goes. Fixed a quarter panel on my old truck and three days later I had the whole thing stripped down in my driveway. Once you start seeing the potential, it's hard to put the tape gun down. You're already doing the hard part with the repair, so laying new color over the whole thing starts to make perfect sense. Just be ready for it to take over your life for a few weekends.

inHad a customer's kid 'help' me fix their flat. Cute moment or safety hazard? How do you deal with this?
Hand them something harmless to hold, like the tire pressure gauge (it keeps them busy), but draw a hard line about staying clear of the jack. Little hands and heavy tools don't mix, you know?

inMy kid finally got why we check baffles on every call.
It's less about the task and more about the shared focus. You get a different kind of talk when you're both looking at the same thing.
