Question about a total grid square fail at the Cahokia dig site
Was mapping a new unit at Cahokia last spring and my total station slipped off the tripod, sending a $15,000 piece of gear into a 3-foot deep test pit and ruining a whole afternoon's worth of elevation data.

Oh man, that's brutal. I once dropped a prism pole right into an open unit, total heart-stopper.

Yeah that's the worst... honestly a little gaffer tape on the pole below the clamp works wonders, stops it from sliding all the way through if your grip slips.

But isn't that just adding another step that can fail? If the tape gets wet or dusty, it loses its grip too, and then you've got sticky residue all over your pole to clean off later.

Did it mess up the unit pretty bad or did you catch it before any damage was done?
