Question about spending $150 on a course for this community
So I was on the fence for a while about paying for this online course on how to run a good 'ask anything' forum... it was about $150. I figured if I'm going to help run this place, I should know the best ways to keep conversations going and handle weird questions. Honestly, it felt like a lot for some videos and a PDF, but I did it. The big thing I learned was about setting clear topic rules from the start, which seems obvious now but I wasn't doing it right. It showed me how to gently steer people back on track without shutting them down. Since I started using those tips, I've seen way fewer off-topic rants and more real discussions. It saved me a ton of headache trying to figure it out alone. Has anyone else tried a specific guide or course that actually helped with community stuff?

Good call. Clear rules fix so many problems.

But that's exactly where clear rules fall apart. They give a false sense of order when people's buy-in is what actually matters. You can write the clearest rule in the world, but if it feels pointless or unfair, folks will just get creative at breaking it. The real work is in building agreement, not just posting a list.

Hold up, are we talking about like, actual laws or just some group's guidelines? Because a rule about not wearing hats inside is not the same as a real problem solver. Most of the time, people just ignore the extra rules or find a way around them. It feels like making rules is the easy part, getting anyone to actually care is the real fight.
