Used to hate on low budget sci fi. One movie changed my mind.
I was at a friend's place in Portland last month. He put on some movie called The Amazing Jonathan from 1997. The acting was terrible, the alien costume looked like a trash bag. But about 20 minutes in I realized I was laughing harder than at any comedy that year. Something clicked for me. Now I seek out that stuff on purpose. Anyone else have a movie that flipped the switch for them?

Oh yeah, Robot Monster is a perfect example. The whole thing is so cheap and weird that your brain just stops fighting it and starts enjoying how bad it is. That's the point where you realize low budget sci fi isn't about being good, it's about having the guts to put a guy in a monster suit and actually film a movie.

The Liquidator or Robot Monster did that for me.

Man, Robot Monster really makes you appreciate the "fine" cinema we have today... my tastes must have been broken by watching too much of that stuff on late-night TV. Guess my brain just gave up on quality control somewhere around the third straight hour of it.
