Book club split 50/50 on a graphic novel, and the debate got personal

Last month our group read a graphic memoir set in 1990s Chicago, and about half the room said the art carried the whole story while the rest argued the author's trauma was too on the nose. The real fight started when one member called it 'not a real book,' and another stood up and said that's exactly why we need these formats. It made me wonder if book clubs should set ground rules for format snobbery before picking titles, or if the clash is part of the point. Has anyone else had a debate where someone's bias about the medium took over the actual discussion of the story?

Nah, comics are just cheap to make. Anyone with a pen can lie on paper. Movies cost millions, so they gotta fake it harder. That's the only difference. Honestly, the essay probably just needed a hot take for clicks.
