Last Tuesday I saved $80 on groceries by actually checking the unit prices
I was at the Kroger in Dallas and just grabbed my usual box of cereal without thinking. But then I noticed the little price tag on the shelf shows the cost per ounce. The store brand was literally half the price for the same size bag. I spent an extra 10 minutes checking every item I bought. Has anyone else tried this and found some big savings?

Wait did you notice if the store brand actually tastes the same or if they changed the recipe recently? I tried this with pasta sauce last month and the store brand had way more sugar than the name brand even though it was cheaper per ounce so it wasn't really a savings in terms of health. One thing that got me was the toilet paper though the big pack looked cheaper but the per sheet cost was actually higher than the medium size. Might be worth checking those little tags on stuff you don't normally think about like paper towels or cleaning supplies because those savings can really add up.

Totally noticed the same pattern with paper towels where the giant roll sometimes actually has less sheets per dollar than the smaller ones. It's wild how many everyday purchases are just designed to look like a good deal when really you're paying more for the convenience of not having to change the roll as often. So much of buying stuff now feels like you gotta do a whole math problem just to figure out if you're actually saving money.

Retail math is designed to confuse you on purpose!

Is it really that serious to worry about toilet paper math? @jamesf29
