Why does nobody talk about how cash envelope budgeting is actually inconvenient?

Ngl, I was dead set against it for years because swiping a card is so easy, but after blowing $300 on takeout in Portland last month, I tried it for groceries and utilities only. Has anyone else found a middle ground where you still get the control without carrying 5 envelopes everywhere?

Saw a guy on YouTube call it "painful accountability" and that stuck with me.

The "carrying 5 envelopes everywhere" part hit too close to home. I literally tried the full cash system once and ended up looking like a broke magician at the checkout fumbling through ten different envelopes for a bag of dog food. My middle ground now is using cash for my fun money and takeout only, then just using my debit card for the boring stuff like gas and rent. It still stings when I hand over real twenties for a pizza, but at least I don't have to keep a separate envelope for my electric bill.

Lol broke magician is the perfect way to describe it. I did the same thing once and ended up dropping a whole envelope of gas money on the floor of a 7-Eleven. It's like the cash system just makes you feel more broke even when you have the money, you know? Now I just keep a single envelope for eating out and another for dumb impulse buys, everything else goes straight to autopay. Saves me from looking like I'm about to perform a card trick while the cashier stares at me. But yeah, handing over real money for a pizza still hurts way more than swiping a card, even though it's the same amount lol.
