Old mechanic told me to never cheap out on jack stands - glad I listened
Buddy at the shop in Phoenix said spend the $150 on a set of Hein-Werners or don't bother jacking up your car at all. Found a cheap set on sale for $40 last year and one collapsed under my Tacoma while I was swapping the oil pan gasket. I bought the good ones the next day. Anyone else have a tool they'll never skimp on again?

That Hein-Werner thing is no joke. I had a buddy in Mesa who swore by his Harbor Freight jack stands, said the ones with the little locking pin were fine. I didn't even get that far, I had a $20 floor jack from some auto parts store give out on me while I had my old Ford Ranger up. It didn't collapse all the way, but it dropped about six inches before the jack handle caught on the frame. Scared the hell out of me, I just sat on the ground for a minute after that. Now I won't touch anything that doesn't have a solid metal lock or a ratcheting mechanism.
