Swore off battery lanterns, but a power outage changed my tune

In my experience, I always thought battery lanterns were too bright and killed the camping vibe. But during a recent trip, our main lights failed and a buddy had a small, dimmable LED lantern. It gave just enough light to cook by without blinding everyone. Your mileage may vary, but I now see the value in having a backup that's easy to use. Take this with a grain of salt, but I'm adding one to my kit.

My camp setup felt incomplete without a dimmable lantern too.

Seriously? I gotta go the other way on this. I've never found a lantern that beats just using a good headlamp. You can point the light right where you need it without washing out the whole area. A real campfire gives all the mood light you could want anyway. Those lanterns always feel like bringing your kitchen ceiling light into the woods. I'm still fine leaving them out of my pack.

A buddy of mine laughed off lanterns until an outage proved him wrong, similar to @claire872's experience.

Wait, your main camp lights just failed completely? That's wild to me. So @claire872 is onto something with her setup feeling off without one, huh. Are we all just trusting cheap string lights now?
