I used to apply to every job I saw online. Now I target maybe 3 a month.

Back in 2021, I was sending out 20 resumes a week through Indeed and never heard back from most. After talking to a recruiter friend in Austin, she told me to focus on networking instead and pick companies that actually fit my skills. Now I spend time on LinkedIn connecting with people at 3 firms a month and tailoring one application to each. Has anyone else found that quality over quantity works better for landing interviews?

Nah, I gotta push back on this a bit. I mean sure, blasting out 50 apps a week is a waste of time, but only targeting 3 companies a month feels WAY too slow. I did the networking thing for a while and it took me SIX months to even get a callback from one of those "targeted" places. In the meantime I still sent out smaller batches - like 10 or 15 a week - to jobs I was a decent fit for. Ended up getting hired from a random Indeed listing I almost skipped. You can focus on quality AND still cast a wider net without it being spam.

Does anyone track which types of jobs actually call back?

Ha, yeah nothing says "hiring" like a numbers game you can't win.
