A local carpenter's use of old barn wood has me inspired

I stopped by a shop in my neighborhood and saw them making tables from old barn wood. They showed me how to clean it up but keep the old look. Do you have any tips for working with weathered wood?

On my last barn wood table, I used a mix of vinegar and steel wool to even out the color. Then I applied boiled linseed oil to protect it without making it shiny.

My friend tried making a shelf from barn wood. He used too much linseed oil and it stayed sticky for a month.

A whole month of sticky wood sounds like a nightmare. I have to side with @michael_green44 on being careful with home fixes. That vinegar and steel wool trick can go really wrong if you don't know the exact mix.
