Overheard my nephew call a flip phone a 'weird little brick' and it stung a bit
I was at a family cookout last weekend and my 14 year old nephew picked up my old Motorola Razr I had sitting on the table. He asked if it was a toy or something from a movie set. It got me thinking about how much phones have changed in just 15 years or so. That thing had a physical keyboard you could actually feel and it survived a drop off a ladder in 2009 without a scratch. Now I'm staring at a $1,000 glass slab that needs a case and a screen protector just to live. Does anyone else keep an old phone around just to remind yourself what durability used to look like?

The ladder drop thing is overblown. I dropped a Nokia brick back in the day and it cracked the screen on the second hit. People remember the one time their phone survived but forget the other times it didn't. Those old phones were thick plastic boxes with tiny screens and terrible cameras. My flip phone couldn't even load a website without crashing. The screen was impossible to see in direct sunlight. You had to type everything three times because the T9 keyboard guessed wrong every other word. I'll take my glass slab that can stream video, navigate anywhere, and take actual photos over a "durable" brick that barely did anything.

Right, because I'm sure the ladder drop was totally real and not just a story someone's been telling for 15 years while conveniently leaving out the part where they dropped it in a toilet the next week. People act like those Nokias were built for war, but really they were just barely functional bricks that could survive a fall because they didn't do anything worth breaking. I'd rather have a phone that can actually take a photo of my lunch without looking like a potato than a phone that can survive a fall from space but can't load a single webpage.
