I was dead wrong about those soft jaws with the rubber inserts
Been running CNC mills for 12 years, mostly aerospace parts. Always thought rubber insert jaws were a gimmick for lazy setup guys. But I had this thin-wall 6061 job last month, 0.030 wall tolerance, and I was getting chatter no matter what. Boss made me try a set of custom soft jaws with this urethane strip in the middle. Damn thing held like a dream, zero marks on the part. Has anyone else had a setup trick they ignored for years that turned out to be the answer?

Did your buddy ever try those vacuum chuck pads for thin parts?

Did he try putting a thin cloth under it first...?

Nah those pads are mostly for bowl work, not really meant for thin flat parts like that.
