Rant: Manual deburring vs. a new tool, which side are you on?

Last week I spent 3 hours deburring a batch of 40 aluminum parts with a hand file because our edge break tool was down. The old-timer next to me said I was wasting time, that a quick pass with a countersink would do the same job in half the time. I get that a dedicated tool is faster, but manual deburring gives me consistent control over the finish. Which way do you lean, do you trust the machine or your own hands for edge work?

Oh for crying out loud. So you spent three hours with a hand file on forty parts and the old timer had to point out there's a faster way? That's like watching someone dig a trench with a spoon and not saying anything until they're elbow deep in the dirt. I mean, I get the appeal of manual control, I really do. But by the time you're on part thirty five your hand is probably shaking like a leaf and the finish is all over the place anyway. There's a reason we invented tools that hold a steady angle - your wrist isn't that reliable after the first twenty parts.

That hand shaking comment hit a little too close to home. I once deburred so many parts my forearm cramped up and I dropped a file right into the chip tray like a goof. Maybe I should listen to the old timers more.

You said "manual deburring gives me consistent control over the finish" but that's not really true. A hand file wobbles and changes angle with every stroke, especially on aluminum where the soft metal gums up the file. A countersink or dedicated edge break tool gives you a fixed angle every time, so each part comes out the same. Hands get tired, grip shifts, you start rushing after the 30th part. The old timer was right about speed but a proper deburring tool is actually more consistent long run. Unless you're doing one-off prototype work where the parts are weird shapes, trust the tool. That's why shops buy them in the first place.
