Talked to a retired toolmaker at the diner yesterday

He said we rely too much on the machine to think for us. Told me about hand-scraping ways on a Bridgeport to get tenths. I've been running a Haas VF2 for 8 years. Never touched a scraper. Made me realize I just push buttons now. How many of you guys still do any real hand fitting?

Honestly that old guy is talking about something deeper than just scrapers. It's about FEELING the work in your hands. My dad ran a shop and said you could hear a perfect cut. Now with the Haas it's just... green lights. We traded that gut feeling for faster parts, and I'm not sure what we lost.

Ever think about how much we gave up for that green light? I used to roll my eyes at the old timers talking about "feel", but what @mianelson said about hearing a perfect cut hits different. It's like we outsourced our own judgment to a screen. You used to know a part was right because your hands told you, not because a program said "cycle complete". Now that connection is just gone.

That line about the green light is exactly it. I used to think the old guys were just being stubborn, but what max_brown said about outsourcing our own judgment is dead on. You don't learn anything from a green light. You just learn to trust the screen over your own senses. It feels like we traded a real skill for a faster part, and now we're just button pushers waiting for the okay.

Ever think we lost more than just time?
