I applied for a project manager job last week and got an instant rejection email. The company uses an AI screening tool that flagged my resume for not having enough 'leadership keywords' from a specific list. It made me realize bias isn't just in the data, it's built into the rules we give these systems. Has anyone else had an AI tool misjudge their experience based on weird criteria?

Talked to a retired toolmaker at the diner yesterday

He said we rely too much on the machine to think for us. Told me about hand-scraping ways on a Bridgeport to get tenths. I've been running a Haas VF2 for 8 years. Never touched a scraper. Made me realize I just push buttons now. How many of you guys still do any real hand fitting?

I finally saw a carbon seatpost fail at a gravel race in Bentonville and now I think the 'just torque it' advice is wrong.

Watching a rider's post snap clean at the binder after a muddy section, where grit had clearly gotten into the clamp interface, convinced me we need to tell people to pull and re-grease carbon parts way more often than we do, or am I overthinking it?

The cheap import didn't have the thermal overload protection the OEM part did, and now I'm eating the cost of the call-back and the replacement. Anyone know a solid supplier for Whirlpool direct-drive motors that won't melt?

Summer heat turned my joint compound to liquid

Yesterday, I was on a site and the heat was crazy! My joint compound mixed up way too thin from the humidity. I tried to apply it anyway, but it just slid right off the wall. I had to stop and make a new batch with less water. Now I always check the forecast before I mix large amounts. What do you all do when the air is moist like that? I want to hear your best ideas for keeping mud good in tough conditions!

Update: I looked up how many images are in the training sets for the big AI models

Saw a good point about this the other day. The argument was that a kid seeing one cat has a whole lifetime of other context built in, like knowing what fur is or what eyes look like. These models start with a blank slate, so yeah, they need a ton of data to build those basic ideas from scratch. It's a different kind of learning, but calling it just copying feels a bit simple, gavin365. They are finding patterns, but so are our brains, just way more efficiently. The real trick is whether they can use those patterns in new ways like a person can.

I was building a chatbot for my church and realized I was training it on bias

Yeah that's a real problem with any kind of database or AI thing. Read an article a while back about a library that digitized its old local paper, and the search results made it look like the town was stuck in the 1950s because that's when the paper was most active. They had to actively go find newer community bulletins and school newsletters to add, otherwise anyone researching would get a totally wrong idea. For your church bot, maybe you need a checklist of all the big areas the church works in now, like the food bank or youth programs, and then go hunt for source material that talks about that recent stuff. It's like you have to force yourself to look for the gaps in your own knowledge, which is super hard lol.

Update: I compared the 'sugar free' and regular versions of the same iced tea brand

Yeah, the "sugar free" label is so sneaky... it's like they rely on people not checking the fine print. Nelson.vera's yogurt story is another perfect example of this. It makes you wonder if the rules for the front of the package are just way too loose. I always flip it over and look at the total carbs now, not just the sugar line.
