Hydration over caffeine: A lesson from a shaky lift last month

I was watching a crane op gulp down energy drinks before a tricky pick. Halfway up, his hands were trembling. We had to halt the lift. Now I insist on water breaks instead. The difference in steadiness is night and day.

Two Monsters before a safety briefing is a choice I can't even picture.

Wonder if this is making a MOUNTAIN out of a molehill. Plenty of guys run on coffee and red bull all day with no shakes. Maybe that one op just had a weird reaction or was already tired. Seems like a personal problem more than a universal rule. Not saying water is bad but banning energy drinks over one incident is a bit much.

You ever watch someone chug two Monsters before a safety briefing? It's not about one guy getting jittery. The rule is for when hands need to be steady for everyone's sake, like operating heavy machinery. Some jobs can't risk the caffeine crash or the shakes, even if most people handle it fine.

After three coffees before a big open house, I once shook so bad I spilled water all over the floor. My clients probably thought I was nervous about the sale, but nope, just too much caffeine. That's why I get why steady hands matter. If I'm jittery showing a house, imagine operating a crane. Water breaks make sense because caffeine hits everyone different. Some handle it, but why risk it when safety's on the line?
