Can we talk about how much smoother my home network runs after I finally updated the router firmware?

I put it off for like 6 months because I figured it wouldn't matter, but after a kid in my crew told me his whole smart home went down from an old firmware bug, I did mine and my streaming hasn't buffered once since last Wednesday - anyone else see a big difference after a simple update?

My brother's router started a small fire because he skipped three firmware updates.

Firmware updates patch security holes but they don't usually cause fires by themselves. More likely your brother had dust buildup inside the router or it was sitting on something that trapped heat. Routers get hot even when they're working right, and skipping updates won't make them burst into flames on their own. The real issue is probably poor ventilation or old hardware that finally gave out.
