TIL a lot of guys are still torquing head bolts dry on Duramax L5Ps and that's a big no-go.

The factory spec for the M14 bolts is 22 ft-lbs plus 130 degrees, but the procedure clearly states to lubricate the bolt threads and underside of the washer with clean engine oil, and I've seen three motors this month with uneven clamp because someone skipped that step.

Yeah the oil step is non-negotiable for even clamping force. Clean threads don't fix the friction difference on the washer face, that's why the spec spells it out. Seen a few warped heads from guys thinking they could skip it lol.

Disagree on the oil being a must. Seen plenty of dry torques hold fine for years if the threads are clean. The spec is a guide, not a law.

So you're just rolling the dice on a blown gasket?
