Had a chat with a gallery owner that flipped my whole process around

Met this older lady who runs a small gallery downtown after I dropped off some prints last Thursday. She looked at my work for maybe 30 seconds and said 'your colors pop but your composition reads like a delivery route map.' She was talking about how I had this habit of putting the focal point dead center like I was aiming for a mailbox. Told me to try the rule of thirds but actually commit to it, not just nudge it slightly. I spent Sunday reworking three pieces and the difference is night and day. Anyone else get slapped with a critique that sounded rude but ended up being the best advice they ever got?

Centering things gives them weight and authority, off-center just looks like you couldn't decide.

Took me years to unlearn centering everything.

Centered always felt safe to me too. This makes me rethink everything.
