That one comment about my lighting still haunts me

I posted a landscape piece on DeviantArt last year and this one person just said 'the sun is behind the house but the shadows don't match.' I spent 3 hours redoing the whole lighting layer after that. Has anyone else had a single critique totally change how you approach a piece?

Honestly I read somewhere that the best critics are the ones who point out something specific but not mean, sounds like you got that. Three hours is dedication not insanity, thats how you really lock in a fundamental skill like lighting. That comment probably stuck with you because deep down you knew they were right and you went and fixed it.

Three hours?! That's insane, I would've rage quit after thirty minutes.

Three hours of focused work isn't insane, it's how you actually improve. Sometimes the best lessons come from the critiques that sting the most.
