Went back and looked at my very first digital painting from 2019
I was digging through my hard drive last night and found this horrible dragon thing I made 3 years ago on a cheap Huion tablet. The colors were all muddy and the lines looked like I drew them with a wet noodle. But you know what, I remember being so proud of it at the time, I posted it on 3 different forums. Has anyone else gone back to their old work and just cringed but also kind of missed how excited you were back then?

That dragon sounds like a good kind of bad though. Muddy colors and shaky lines are just part of learning. Still, there's something special about that first spark of wanting to make something.

Man that first dragon drawing I did still sits in my sketchbook. Colors were all wrong and the wings looked like floppy pancakes. But I kept it anyway. There's something about that early stuff that hits different. Like you can see the exact moment where you decided "I'm gonna make this thing because I want to." Keep making those shaky lines. They turn into solid ones faster than you'd think.

smith.parker that first dragon you're talking about, I bet the wings being pancakes is actually a feature, not a bug. Those early drawings have this raw energy that you sort of lose once you get too good at controlling the lines. I have a sketch from 2018 of a wolf that looks like a lumpy potato with legs, but the expression on its face is more real than anything I can draw now. You can see the moment where you just went for it without worrying about anatomy or shading. That's a special kind of bravery that fades if you don't keep feeding it. Hold onto that pancake dragon, man.
