Took me 3 years to realize I was overpacking my bags

I was hauling 45 pounds of gear through hostels in Bangkok before a guy at the front desk laughed and asked if I was moving in. Now I keep it under 20 pounds and my back thanks me every train ride. Anyone else find they cut half their stuff after the first big trip?

Damn, that's brutal. My buddy Mike did the same thing showing up to a hostel in Paris with a full hiking backpack AND a duffel bag. The front desk girl just stared at him and said "you know there's a grocery store downstairs, right?" He ended up mailing half his clothes home the next day. Now he's the guy who travels with just a carry-on and laughs at everyone else.

Three pairs of shoes was my breaking point, now I wear my bulkiest ones on the plane.

Oh man, 45 pounds is wild for hostels. I learned that lesson the hard way too, dragging a suitcase up five flights in Chiang Mai. Really makes you question every pair of shoes you packed.

@davidkim I mean, "three pairs of shoes" is kind of normal for most people though.
