Rant: A missed intake screen cleaning shut down my operation for a day

I got lazy and stopped cleaning the intake screen after each shift. Two weeks later, the pump overheated and failed right in the middle of a channel job. We lost a full day of dredging while it was repaired. Now I never skip it, and the machine runs without any hiccups.

Got lazy and stopped cleaning" was always my thinking too. This story fixed that for me.

Hold up, I actually disagree with cleaning it every single shift. That seems like overkill unless you're in super muddy conditions. @the_christopher has a point about avoiding clogs, but a quick visual check often does the trick. You can find a solid middle ground without wasting time.

My first summer running a dredge, I learned fast that a clogged screen kills a pump. Honestly, skipping that five-minute clean just guarantees a five-hour repair job later. It’s never worth the downtime.

But cleaning every shift seems overkill, right?
