I used to think pockets on dresses were pointless, but a rainy Tuesday in Seattle changed my mind

I was walking to a meeting last week, wearing a linen shift dress I'd made (no pockets, of course), and it started pouring. I mean, the kind of rain where you're soaked in ten seconds. My phone was in my hand, my keys were in my other hand, and I had to dig my bus pass out of my tiny crossbody bag while getting absolutely drenched. I had to just stand under an awning for a minute and put everything down on a wet bench. Right then, I saw another woman walk by in a simple wool coat dress, hands tucked cozily in her side pockets, looking completely at ease. It was like a lightbulb moment. I spent that whole evening unpicking the side seams of three of my favorite dresses to add in-seam pockets. I used a sturdy cotton canvas for the pocket bags so they wouldn't sag. Now I won't design anything without them. Has anyone else had a really simple, everyday moment that totally flipped how you design one specific feature?

Oh man, that exact same thing happened to me but with a handful of dog treats! I was out walking my lab and ran into a neighbor with her new puppy, and I had to fumble with the plastic bag in my windbreaker pocket while trying to hold the leash. The next day I sewed a tiny separate zipper pocket inside the big pocket of my favorite jacket, just for treats. Now it's my go-to dog walking layer. It's crazy how one annoying moment can make you redesign everything. I even put a little key clip in there too.

Why not just use a treat pouch instead of sewing your jacket?

But is getting a little wet really a crisis that needs a sewing project?
