Why does nobody talk about how dangerous cheap fabric stabilizer can be?

I used to buy the generic stuff from the craft store for my structured pieces, thinking it was fine. About 6 months ago, a corset I made for a friend completely warped after one wear because the stabilizer melted under stage lights. I switched to a professional-grade fusible from a brand my local shop in Denver carries, and it costs about $12 more per yard. The difference in heat tolerance and shape retention is insane. Has anyone else had a project ruined by bad materials like this?

Yeah, the "tiny fabric trampolines" thing is so real. I read a blog post from a costume designer who said cheap interfacing can actually release fumes when it overheats, not just warp. She had to throw out a whole batch of dance costumes because the smell backstage was so bad. It's not just about the project failing, it can be a legit health thing in closed spaces. That's why I won't skimp on it anymore, especially for anything that might get warm. Saving a few bucks just isn't worth wrecking your hard work or breathing in weird chemicals.

Watched a whole set of placemats I made for my mom turn into a sad, wavy mess in the dishwasher. The cheap interfacing I used just gave up and shrank in weird directions. They looked like tiny fabric trampolines. Lesson learned the hard way, and now my mom uses them as very lumpy coasters.

That story about the stage lights is wild, but does it even compare to kitchen heat? Made some oven mitts as a gift with bargain bin interfacing, and let's just say the first cookie tray they touched left a permanent vinyl smiley face melted right into the fabric. Guess my friend got a branded kitchen accessory instead.
