Vent: I was sure the $40 magnetic parts tray from the hardware store was a gimmick, but it's kept every bolt organized for my carb rebuild this week.
What's a simple tool you thought was pointless that actually saved your bacon on a job?

Magnetic trays are great, but they're not $40.

My buddy Steve tried the baking sheet trick like annajenkins said. He knocked it off his workbench and spent twenty minutes crawling around for a single tiny screw in the gravel under his truck. Bought a cheap magnetic tray the next day, said it was the best ten bucks he ever spent.

Disagree completely. That tray sounds overpriced and unnecessary. I just use an old baking sheet for small parts, it works fine and costs nothing. Marydavis has a point about the price. For bigger jobs, I sort bolts into old yogurt cups. Fancy tools are for people who like spending money, not for getting the job done.
