Just had to decide between replacing my old water heater or patching it one more time
After the pilot light went out for the third time this winter, I finally bit the bullet on a new tank and the $1,200 install from a plumber in Phoenix, and it's been running smooth for two weeks now - has anyone else had to make that call between fixing something old or just replacing it?

Oh man, tell me about it! I just went through the same thing with my washer - kept fixing the belt every few months before I finally caved and bought a new one. In my experience, the energy savings thing is real, even if it takes more like 18 months to break even. Your mileage may vary on that though.

I read somewhere that new water heaters pay for themselves in energy savings after about a year.

My 2012 Hyundai had a check engine light that stayed on for like eight months before I finally traded it in. The thing about energy savings on water heaters is it really depends on what you had before. If you went from an old gas one to a new high efficiency gas model, the savings are real but it's more like a year and a half to two years like that other person said. The electric ones are a different story though, especially in Phoenix with your rates. I wouldn't count on that one year payback number being accurate for everyone. My buddy works at a plumbing supply house and he says most people see like $80-100 a year in savings max unless their old tank was really ancient.
