I finally checked what my HOA fees actually cover and nearly choked

So I was paying $185 a month to my HOA in Dunwoody for like 2 years without really looking at the breakdown. Last week I actually read the budget they mailed out and found out $45 of that goes to landscaping for the entrance sign that's got dead bushes. Another $30 is for 'community events' that nobody in my cul-de-sac has ever heard of. Has anyone else dug into their HOA statement and found stuff that feels like a total waste?

Nearly choked sounds about right. I looked at mine last month and found $50 a month for "lake maintenance" but the nearest water feature is a drainage ditch that only fills up when it rains hard (like twice a year max). And they mow it anyway so it's not even a lake or a pond, just tall grass they charge us for.

Wait, you're seriously getting charged for a drainage ditch? Ngl, I had the same thing happen with "landscaping fees" for a patch of weeds behind my complex that nobody even walks past.

Charge you for a swamp you can't even swim in. @aaronsullivan got the premium ditch tax like the rest of us.
