Spent 30 minutes inside a massive highway rest stop in Wyoming and realized something weird
I had to stop at that big rest area near Laramie on I-80 last week and grabbed a coffee from the vending machine. While I was sitting there, I counted at least 12 families just hanging out like it was a park, not a pit stop. Kids were running around, parents were chatting with strangers, and someone had even laid out a blanket on the grass patch. It hit me that these rest stops are actually social hubs in the middle of nowhere, but everyone treats them like just a bathroom break. I think that's kind of cool and underrated. Has anyone else seen this at a rest stop and thought the same thing?

Honestly, you mentioning that someone laid out a blanket really stuck with me. It's funny because I used to be one of those people who just rushed in and out, seeing rest stops as nothing but a necessary evil. But reading this, I totally get what you mean about them being underrated social spots. Ngl, I've definitely seen families treating the grassy areas like a mini park, especially on long road trips where you just need a real break. It's kinda cool that in the middle of nowhere, people can just chill and connect like that.

Nah, I gotta disagree hard here. Rest stops are not "social spots" at all. They're pitstops. Pure function. You're there to pee, stretch, and grab a gas station hot dog if you're feeling brave. The whole blanket-on-the-grass thing? That's just people making the best of a boring necessity, not some deep social connection. I've walked past those families at rest stops in Kansas and they're usually glued to their phones or yelling at kids. Not exactly town square vibes. Call me cynical but I don't think anyone's making lasting friendships between the vending machines and the sketchy bathrooms.

Actually, I remember reading an article a few years back about how these big Interstate rest stops in places like Wyoming and Nebraska are some of the last real public third spaces left in rural America. The author made the point that they're kind of like modern-day town squares for travelers, which I thought was a nice way to put it. It really sticks with you once you notice it yourself.
