I finally snapped at the grocery store self-checkout machine

It kept yelling at me to 'place item in bagging area' when I was holding a single lime. I just walked out and left my cart sitting there with all the stuff in it. Has anyone else just abandoned a full cart over something dumb?

Picked the cheap drill over the fancy one for my tool bag and it's still kicking after 2 years

I went with a $40 Skil instead of the $150 Milwaukee at Home Depot because I figured if I lose it on the job I won't cry. Dude it's dropped off a ladder twice and still drills straight into concrete. Anyone else stick with budget gear and accidentally win?

Just found out that my favorite BBQ joint uses a 50-year-old smoker that was literally patched with a license plate

I was talking to the owner of this place called Smokey's Pit in Austin last weekend while waiting for my brisket order. He showed me this old rusted smoker out back that had a Texas license plate bolted over a hole in the side. He told me it was from 1974 and has never been replaced because it keeps the heat just right. I looked it up later and found out that some pitmasters actually believe older smokers with welded patches taste better because the seasoned metal adds flavor. I don't get how that works but the brisket was amazing so I can't argue. Has anyone else run into some weird old equipment that people swear by even though it looks like junk?

Just realized I was hand washing my cast iron skillet wrong for 6 years

I was scrubbing my Lodge skillet with soap and a steel wool pad every time I cooked, thinking I was keeping it clean. Then my buddy watched me do it last weekend and laughed his ass off, said I was stripping the seasoning every time. How do you clean your cast iron without messing up the finish?

Got 40 downvotes for saying pineapple belongs on pizza and I stand by it

It happened in a food group on here last Tuesday. I posted a picture of my homemade Hawaiian pizza with fresh pineapple and crispy bacon. Within an hour I had 40 downvotes and people telling me I ruined dinner. I ate that whole pizza by myself and it was amazing. Anyone else get slammed for a food opinion you won't change on?

Vent: The coffee shop on Elm Street charges $7 for a latte and then asks for a tip

I stopped at Brew & Rise downtown yesterday and paid $7.20 for a plain latte, then the iPad screen flipped around asking for 18, 20, or 25 percent. Since when did pouring hot milk into a cup become a tipped service? Are we supposed to tip the cashier at the grocery store next?

My coworker flat out told me my emails were too long and now I keep them to 3 sentences max

She said nobody reads paragraphs at work and she was right. I cut all the fluff and my response rate actually went up. Anyone else get called out for something small like this and it made a huge difference?

Last Wednesday the guy handed me a $10 Starbucks gift card and said your dog used to make my whole route miserable, now he just wags his tail, has anyone else actually won over a neighborhood nemesis like that?

Unpopular opinion: I was meal prepping wrong for 2 years until a coworker saw my chicken and said 'that's why it tastes like cardboard'

I was baking all my chicken breast at 400 for 40 min like some Pinterest board told me. She showed me how to brine it for 20 min in salt water and now I actually look forward to Monday lunch. Anyone else have a cooking hack that made you feel stupid for not knowing it?

Went from zero to decent guitar in 3 months by ditching YouTube lessons

I spent a year watching fancy guitar tutorials on YouTube and got nowhere. Then I downloaded a simple metronome app and practiced one chord change for 15 minutes every morning. After 90 days I could finally play along to a whole song without stopping. The difference was just focusing on one thing at a time instead of trying to learn everything. Has anyone else hit a wall with online lessons and found a simpler way that actually worked?

Spent 30 minutes inside a massive highway rest stop in Wyoming and realized something weird

I had to stop at that big rest area near Laramie on I-80 last week and grabbed a coffee from the vending machine. While I was sitting there, I counted at least 12 families just hanging out like it was a park, not a pit stop. Kids were running around, parents were chatting with strangers, and someone had even laid out a blanket on the grass patch. It hit me that these rest stops are actually social hubs in the middle of nowhere, but everyone treats them like just a bathroom break. I think that's kind of cool and underrated. Has anyone else seen this at a rest stop and thought the same thing?

DAE think buttercream frosting is way overrated compared to cream cheese frosting for cakes?

I made two birthday cakes last weekend, one with buttercream and one with cream cheese frosting, and the cream cheese one got eaten in 10 minutes while the buttercream one sat there half-eaten, so which side are you on?

Hit me hard when I learned people in big cities pay $2,500 a month for a studio with no laundry

I was looking at rental prices online out of curiosity last night. Not moving or anything, just bored. Anyway I pulled up listings for San Francisco and New York and my jaw hit the floor. A 400 square foot studio with no washer/dryer in the building running $2,500 a month. And the comments on the forums were like 'that's a steal' or 'good deal.' Meanwhile I'm sitting here paying $950 for a two bedroom with in-unit laundry in a midwestern town. So here's the debate: are people paying that much just for location and job access, or is this some kind of collective insanity where everyone agreed rent can be this high? I get city life has perks but no laundry for that price? Has anyone else run the numbers on what you actually get for your money in those markets?
