Client asked me to fix their AC at 11pm on a Friday night
I was wrapping up a job in Phoenix last summer and this guy calls me literally at 10:45pm saying his server room AC is down and the temp is already hitting 90. I get there and it's some janky DIY install where they used flex duct for the return. Pulled out my phone to show him the code violation and he just shrugged and said 'just get it cold.' I patched it with foil tape and a new capacitor, charged him $350 for the after-hours call, and told him to get a real contractor Monday. Has anyone else dealt with clients who think HVAC is just 'make air cold' no matter what?

Walked into a house once where the guy had a space heater running right next to the broken AC. Said he was 'keeping the circuit warm' so the unit would turn on. Charged him my rate and told him to call a priest instead of an HVAC guy next time. Some people think we're wizards who just wave a magic wand over a compressor.

Man, that's rough @brianreed. People come up with some wild stuff sometimes, you gotta just laugh and move on.

That space heater thing is just one of those moments where you realize people treat appliances like they have feelings or superstitions. It's the same pattern you see everywhere, like people who think their car needs to "warm up" for twenty minutes in summer or that restarting their router three times makes it work better. We all create these little rituals because admitting we don't understand something feels worse than making up a reason. Your customer made that leap from "I don't know how this works" to "I bet it just needs a little heat" without stopping to consider it might be broken. It's kind of like how some folks think leaving a phone on the charger overnight "trains" the battery or that turning a printer off and on again actually troubleshooot something real. Ever notice how people with no clue about a thing will latch onto one weird detail and build a whole story around it?
