The old timer vs new release debate on IMDB ratings

I finally hit 500 ratings on IMDB after like 4 years of grading everything I watch. But I noticed something weird - the old classics I love are sitting at 4.5 stars while some new garbage is pushing 7. So are we all just rating based on nostalgia and craft, or are newer movies getting a free pass? What's your take on what makes a movie 'so bad it's good' actually rank higher?

Exactly my experience. Those old classics deserve way better scores.

The 1941 Maltese Falcon has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and people treat it like it's untouchable. I watched it last year and honestly it drags in the middle with all those long conversations in Sam Spade's office. Bogart is good but the whole thing feels like a stage play that got filmed. I get that it was groundbreaking for its time but that doesn't mean every frame is perfect. Scores should reflect how a movie holds up now, not just its place in history. A 92 or 93 seems about right for something that's clearly showing its age.
