My book club finally had a real debate after 8 months of polite nodding

We've been meeting every other Thursday for almost a year, and everyone always just agreed with whoever spoke first. Last week we read "The Midnight Library" and I brought up how I thought the ending was too neat and predictable. Two other members jumped in saying they felt the same way, but then Carol pushed back hard saying the whole point was hope. We went back and forth for 20 minutes straight and it was the most fun we've ever had. Has anyone else gotten their group to break out of the agree-about-everything rut?

Yeah the "too neat" thing reminds me of when my D&D group argued for an hour about whether that one goblin was lying.

Our DM still brings up that goblin three campaigns later like it was a pivotal moment in the story. I think he just wanted us to feel smart for catching him.

The "polite nodding" thing cracked me up because that was my book club for like a year too. The only thing that finally broke ours was someone straight up saying "okay I'm gonna play devil's advocate here" and then we all felt safer actually disagreeing after that.
