I thought asking for a raise was a sure way to get on my boss's bad side

For years, I avoided asking for more money, thinking it would make me look greedy or cause trouble. Then, after I closed a huge deal on a $750,000 property in March, my mentor told me to just schedule the meeting and list my wins. I was nervous, but I made a simple list of the three big sales I'd done and the extra work I took on. I asked for a 10% bump. My boss actually said yes on the spot and told me he was glad I brought it up because he hadn't realized how much I was doing. The lesson wasn't just about the money, it was that speaking up with facts shows you know your value. Has anyone else had a boss react better than they thought when you asked for more?

That's a nice story but it sounds like a lucky break more than a solid plan. Bosses can just as easily see that list of wins and decide you're getting paid enough already, or worse, that you're getting too big for your boots. A lot of managers really do take it personally, like you're not happy with them. The facts might just give them a clearer list of reasons to say no.

Yeah exactly, seen that happen. My old boss would take any talk about money as a personal insult. Made the whole thing pointless.

Isn't it funny how we build up these scary stories in our heads? I see it all the time with people afraid to send food back or ask a simple question.
