My buddy's kid did something like that at a school art show... the teacher asked for honest thoughts and the kid just said one painting looked like a sad potato. Everyone cracked up, even the artist. It wasn't mean, just a blunt kid observation. Galleries might be going for that real, unfiltered take. Lets people see the work in a totally new way.

Honestly, the "roast" part is getting blown out of proportion. It was more like sharp, funny art criticism from a kid's view.
