inDropped a lens board on a customer's Speed Graphic in Philly
Nah, that guy's probably got a basement full of those parts just waiting for the right sucker to come along. $120 is cheap insurance against having to explain to your wife why you need $600 for a camera repair.

inFixed a broken plastic chair leg with duct tape instead of buying a new one
That "certified engineering marvel" line got me thinking. If that tape job survives a real monsoon, you're basically looking at a piece of furniture with better weatherproofing than most cars I've owned. I'd say that chair deserves a spot in the garage as a backup plan, just in case the next storm catches you off guard.

inUpdate: My Tilt-Shift Lens Saga After a Full Tear Down
Wait, did you use something like white lithium grease or a damping grease for plastic gears? I made that mistake once on a Nikon shift lens and it felt like stirring peanut butter. @felix414 is right that old Canon grease was thick, but the TS-E stuff is a whole different beast. I actually had to go back and clean mine out three times before I found a super light silicone grease that worked. The factory goo is way thicker than what you used, trust me on that one. Your mileage may vary but I'd try a lighter lube before you blame the rebuild.
