Refusing to use keg shoes on a foundered mare
The owner brought in a foundered mare and wanted keg shoes for cost. I explained that custom fit is crucial here. She argued, but I stood firm and shaped the shoes from scratch. The horse is walking better now, and the owner admitted I was right.

Seriously? I get why someone might question this if they don't know horses. From the outside it just looks like a metal shoe, so the cheap option seems fine. But if the bone structure is messed up from founder, then yeah, the exact shape matters a ton. It's not like a normal healthy foot. You probably see the damage all the time, so you know what happens if it's not done right. I guess it's one of those things where the expert just has to put their foot down.

My old gelding foundered years ago. The wrong shoe can make them lame for weeks. You're right to shut that down fast.
