Shoutout to the guy who tried to help me dig a hole and almost hit a gas line. Now I double-check everything before starting.

I used to think checking for lines was overkill. Stories like yours prove it's necessary. Now I always call before I dig too.

Oh man, don't you learn the hard way? I hit a sprinkler line once that looked like a geyser, and my water bill that month was a scary surprise. Calling 811 is free, so why not, right? It just seems smart to know what you're poking at before you put a shovel in the ground.

My own version of that was almost taking out a water line (the spray was impressive, at least). Can't be too careful with what's under the grass.

A metal detector saved me last spring when I was putting in a new fence post. It picked up the buried cable line right where I planned to dig. The basic models aren't too expensive and give real peace of mind. Definitely worth the investment before any big yard project.
