Ran into Mrs. Jenkins at the Fullerton farmer's market and she changed my mind about something simple

I was buying some avocados last Saturday near the Wilshire entrance when Mrs. Jenkins from my street walked up. She saw me eyeing a bag of oranges from California and said 'those are sprayed three times before they hit the shelf, honey.' She told me she only buys from the old guy at the corner stand who grows everything in his backyard in Anaheim. I dropped my bag right there and walked over to his stall. He sold me a dozen for $4 and they actually taste like oranges. Has anyone else noticed that the produce at the big stands seems off lately?

hold up, i gotta push back on this a little. i work at a hardware store but i also help out at my brother's produce stand on weekends and the big stands follow strict rules about spraying and washing. the old guy at the corner might be great but he's not doing the same volume testing that the big guys have to do. trust me, i've seen the paperwork. those oranges from california are washed before they even hit the truck, and the spray is usually gone by the time you buy them anyway.

Reminds me of the time my dog clippers got residue from some organic avocado treatment and i had to rewash the whole batch.

Always the small stands are where you get the real deal. @karenb97 makes a fair point about the big stands following rules, but there's a difference between safe produce and good produce. It's like how store-bought tomatoes look perfect but taste like cardboard compared to the misshapen ones from a neighbor's garden.
