inBack in 2010, I'd always use a pry bar to get a stubborn tie rod end loose. Now I just use a $40 pickle fork from the parts store and it's done in 30 seconds.
Read an article once where a mechanic swore by heating the joint with a torch first, then hitting it. Said the metal expands and breaks the rust's grip. Always seemed a bit risky to me with all the grease and rubber right there. Your buddy's hammer method sounds a lot safer for a home garage. Ever try putting some penetrating oil on it for a few days before you start whacking?

inPSA: My hydrangea droop fix that saved my summer weddings
Okay, lindabarnes, I have to jump in on the "soak them for a full minute, no less" part. I used to be strict about timing it too, but honestly, I've found that going overboard can backfire. Leaving them in the vinegar water for like three or four minutes actually started to burn the ends of my stems. Now I just do a quick thirty-second dip, just until I see a few bubbles stop coming up. It works just as well without the risk of damaging them.

inRemember when we all used to fight with those old plastic bowl clips?
Oh my gosh, that is such a smart fix! Those old clips were the worst for slipping. I totally feel your pain from back in the day. That rubber band trick is genius for getting a solid hold without any damage. It's amazing how the simplest solutions are often the best ones.

inUpdate: I booked a flight to Lisbon for $200 by changing my search method
Honestly, that sounds like a lot of extra hassle just to save a few hundred dollars. You have to get yourself between Lisbon and Porto now, and budget airlines nickel and dime you for every bag. By the time you add in a train ticket and luggage fees, you might as well have booked the simple round trip. Sometimes the easy way is worth the extra cost.
