My uncle swore by using a 3-inch putty knife for stretching carpet in tight corners.

My old boss in Spokane used a butter knife for the same thing. I felt pretty dumb buying a specialty tool after that.

I always thought boxed cake mix was fine until I made a real one from scratch

Honestly, I get where you're coming from, but I have the opposite take. For a basic weekday cake, the box mix is a total win. The scratch cake is better, sure, but it's also way more work and dirty dishes for something my family just eats after dinner. The box is cheap, fast, and always turns out the same. My time is worth something too.
