My mom called me out on my 'whole grain' bread choice
I was feeling good about my grocery run last week, grabbing my usual loaf with 'Made with Whole Grains' in big letters on the front. When my mom visited, she picked it up, flipped it over, and read the ingredients. She pointed at the list and said, 'Look, enriched wheat flour is the first thing. That's just white flour. The whole grains are way down there.' I checked and she was right. The first three items were refined flours. I had no idea that phrase didn't mean it was mostly whole grain. Now I only buy bread if 'whole wheat flour' is the first ingredient, not just somewhere on the list. It feels like such a simple trick, but it totally changed how I shop. Has anyone else had a family member point out a label lie you totally missed?
